Chinese follow lunar calendar for their festivities so every year their new year falls between end of January to middle of February based on celestial lunar movements.  The festival, unlike countries setting aside one day for their new year, continues for 5 days officially although people generally take two weeks off from work.  The new year is linked to Chinese zodiac which follows 12 years cycle similar to western zodiac.
