Konark international sand art festival is organized every year by Orissa Tourism. People from different countries take part in this competition of making sand art sculptures.
The festival is held for 5 days in December coinciding with Konark dance festival. This year, 2017, artists from Canada, Russia, Germany, Singapore, Mexico, Ghana and several other countries took part alongside artists of different states of India. Each day artists were tasked to create a sand sculpture based on a given theme that is day 1, Save the Sea; day 2, Buddhist heritage; day 3, eco-tourism followed by day 4, ethnic heritage and last 5th day for world heritage. Thousands of people came from nearby towns and cities to see this unique art festival.
History of Konark Sand Art Festival
It all started in 2015 as part of state government’s initiative to make dance festival (held concurrently) popular. The festival has held on the Chandrabhaga beach which is a short distance from famous Konark Sun Temple.
