Our Experience Of Puri To Kolkata By Train

The nearest airport to Puri is Bhubaneswar which is also capital of Orissa state and 90 minutes away by car. There are regular scheduled flights operated by Air India, Indigo, GoAir and Airasia. The flight time is little over an hour and 21 days advance purchase ticket will normally cost US$30 equivalent in Indian Rupees.

There are more than a dozen trains between Kolkata and Puri. They have coaches ranking from basic non air-conditioned unreserved general to comfortable first class reserved coach with free wifi and food. The most reliable and fasted in Shatabdi Express starting at Howrah (Kolkata) and reaching Puri (after 7 stops) in six hours. Price for ticket is $30 for first class and $20 for AC chair car. Tickets can be booked online at official website of Indian railway by using international credit card or domestic credit/debit cards.

10 hour Bus journey between Puri to Kolkata is not for faint hearted person.  The road between two cities are nothing compared to western highways that international customers expect.  There are few bus companies offering scheduled ride between Kolkata and Puri.

Orissa State Road Transport Corporation provides air-conditioned bus for Rs 600 (US$9).  The ride feels more like a truck than luxury bus.

Shyamoli and Dolphins Tours both offer Volvo bus with sleeping or seat options.  The prices and service quality are generally same.  Expect to pay $10.

Most service operators will pick up from Puri main bus station and drop you in Esplanade bus stand near Eden gardens.
